History
The Western Islands played an important role in trade and industry in the Golden Age. The area was filled with warehouses, shipyards and dockworkers.

Prinseneiland is the smallest island of the Western Isles. In 1623 the sale of building plots began; these were intended for wood storage and tar. Of the 900 warehouses that Amsterdam has, there are over 100 on Prinseneiland.

In the 19th century artists George Breitner and Jacob Oil lived and worked between the port activities. After the Second World War, the island was discovered by, and a hot spot for, many more artists and musicians such as Johan van der Keuken, Peter Schat and Willem Breuker. Since then, the island has changed into an attractive residential and working environment.
