Description

Introduction

Hidden on a picturesque, shady and quiet canal, right around the corner from the Nine Streets in the centre of Amsterdam, stands a true little town palace. Because it is on the first floor of this parcelled-off building – according to the official housing regulations – it should be referred to as an “apartment”. But this is grossly underrating this grand and stylish home.
Not only is it large and spacious (411 m2), it is free-standing on three sides and surrounded by no less than three lush gardens in the front, the left and the right. To the left there is the chapel by the architect Bleys and the courtyard of a former monastery. To the right there is the superbly landscaped garden of De Uylenburgh, a prestigious retirement home, and in the front the garden belonging to the ground floor. It is private and secluded, yet located in the heart of the Jordaan. Luxurious and comfortable living combined perfectly with a presentable place to work and entertain guests. In other words: for the more ambitious home hunter, unique living quarters with security parking within walking distance.

General - Home Owners Association
When it was built in 1923, this former school building was given the name ‘De Voorzienigheid’. It was redeveloped and split into apartments in 1989. It has a sound home owners association and its own caretaker.
The building has an elegant entry hallway with original details and high ceilings. Entering past the central tambour with mailboxes and bell-switch panel, the apartment on the first floor can be reached via the elevator or the broad stairwell still with its original tiles.

General 47F
The entrance, with its Belgian hardstone floor and three wardrobe closets leads to a long hallway toward the living room. Along this hallway there are several quarters that are partly connected, which makes the home feel quite organic. Despite that the home is large, you do not get the sense of getting lost inside it. It offers the opportunity to decorate each space to give each of the spaces its own character. The floors are covered almost entirely with parquet.
Closets have been built to blend into the walls out of sight, providing ample storage space everywhere in the apartment. The house itself stands on a parcel of bought-off ground and has been supplied with extensive security, double-glass windows and is structurally perfectly maintained.

Reception room
At the entrance to the apartment, immediately to the right, there is a spacious and elegant room with high ceilings and windows, a gas fireplace and a mezzanine with a study. Along the side with the fireplace there is a low bench made of smooth hard stone and there is a hanging system for picture frames hidden in the walls. Because it is separated from the rest of the house and overlooks the superbly sculpted garden of the adjacent building, it is an oasis of peace and quiet. A small staircase leads to the kitchen and is therefore perfect for holding intimate or business dinners. This room could also very well be turned into a studio.

Kitchen
A joy for any cooking enthusiast! The custom made kitchen has been equipped with almost every thinkable piece of professional equipment and is furthermore, quite suitable for home catering. The kitchen tops are of stainless steel and there are several high-end appliances, of brands such as Miele and Wolf, a special warmth drawer to keep dishes at temperature, two ceramic induction plates, a wok furnace and a tepanyaki grill. There is a quooker, a garbage disposal, as well as an espresso machine and a steam oven, both directly connected to the water supply. The long, custom-made counter with storage space underneath it stands by a broad set of windows. The kitchen also looks out over the garden along the right side of the building. The kitchen can be closed off from the dining room with doors and a sliding door hidden in the wall. However, in spite of all the high-end kitchen technology available, the kitchen does not have the coldness one might expect in a professional kitchen.

Dining room
Directly outside of the kitchen, on the right is the dining room, which offers seating space for a large group. Again, the custom-built closets inside the walls offer plenty of storage space. Although separated by a wall, the dining room is still directly connected to the the living room.

Living room
With its 4.80 meters, the ‘high’-ceilinged living room could perhaps better be described as ‘tall’. It is drenched in sunlight with grandeur and atmosphere. Visible inside this ‘tall’ space are two cast-iron support columns. The fireplace is situated within an arched space within the wall, which offers an intimate sitting area. Mounted spots illuminate the high ceilings around a meticulously built in sprinkler system.
The view along the left side of the apartment is of the inner garden of the former monastery and the old chapel, with its lights shining enchantingly in the evenings through the stained glass windows. Bleys’ chapel is currently in use as an office. Along the entire breadth of the living room, facing South, runs a balcony terrace, again, with cast-iron columns, though smaller than those in the living room. At one end of the terrace there is a high storage closet. Below there is a large, enclosed garden and plantation on the terrace itself offers much added privacy.
Adjacent to the dining room there is a smaller but fully operational kitchen. This space is equipped with a fridge-freezer combination, wine cabinet, hot air oven, a warmth drawer, a five-burner gas stove, dishwasher, as well as a washer and dryer.

The Study
Coming in from the central hallway, to the left, through sliding doors, you enter a light TV room annex study, with ample storage space provided by the custom-made open and closed closets. It has a view of the chapel and the surrounding greenery. In the hallway, on either side, there are two identical toilets opposite from one another.
Bedrooms

The house has three bedrooms, each with its own bathroom. All can be reached via a glass bridge between the kitchen and the living room. Because the house is on the back side of the house, an unhindered night’s rest is guaranteed.

Master bedroom
A tastefully re-modelled, spacious bedroom with a in the wall hidden access door to the state of the art bathroom, with a Finish sauna, a sink-top made of Belgian hardstone, a Jetstream bubble bath and a separate shower. A stairwell connects it to a gym with mirrored wall and its own shower and steam room, and which connects directly to the mezzanine of the reception room.

Bedroom 2
A slightly smaller bedroom with its own bathroom, with open book-laid Carrera marble above the bathtub. It also has a shower and sink with counter. It has a built-in closet along its entire length, offering meters of wardrobe and storage possibilities. It is always a delight to wake up in this room, with its view of the styleful garden and fountain to the right.

Bedroom 3
An L-shaped bedroom with a small bathroom, also situated on the right side of the house.

Storage and Parking
Downstairs, in the communal area of the basement, there are two storage spaces. Around the corner, in the Konijnenstraat, are the parking spaces, behind an automatically and remotely (also via telephone) operated gate.
General area
Public transport is within walking distance. In the area there is an abundance of shops, cafés and restaurants. Leidseplein is at a 5 minute walk, with its Stadsschouwburg, cinemas, De La Mar Theatre, etc. Vondelpark is only a short bike ride away.
